Washington's Continental Army
was once again forced from the field of battle,
thus signifying an English victory. But the American
Army had given a hard fight to it's enemy, and
it was well accounted for in many instances. After
the battle, Colonel Hartley of the Pennsylvania
line wrote a letter to his friends William Atlee
and Paul Zantzinger upon the only desk he had
available, the head of a drum. " To-morrow
may be of great consequence to America- we shall
not wait for the enemy again-we are just moving-
our troops are numerous and in high spirits. We
hope soon to finish the Campaign with Success.
All of your friends behaved well in action (at
Brandywine) and the survivors are ready for action
again. "
