As British troops
searched for a ford across the Breach Inlet at
Sullivan's Island they were disuaded from crossing,
not only by the depth of the water, but the two
artillery positions covering the northern approaches.
Artillerymen of the 4th SC Regt as well as infantry
from the 3rd SC and militia man the guns, with
labor supplied by Charleston's slaves. This early
in the war, slaves and "free blacks"
were not yet serving in the South Carolinian line
as armed soldiers.
